What to Bring on a Hike: 7 Things You Need for Hiking

What to Bring on a Hike: 7 Things You Need for Hiking

Being unprepared is bad, but being unprepared when you’re off-grid and in the woods is worse.

Whether you’re hiking for the first time or climbing mountains every weekend, knowing what to bring hiking is important. You don’t want the wrong shoes or an empty water bottle holding you back from going the extra mile.

Here’s what to bring on a hike:

  1. Backpack
  2. Hiking boots
  3. Layers
  4. Food and water
  5. First aid kit
  6. A compass
  7. Swiss army knife

1. Backpack

You need a bag, and you don’t want it to get in your way. Get a backpack with plenty of compartments and ergonomic design so it won’t slide around when you’re hiking.

2. Hiking boots

A good pair of boots goes a long way. When it comes to things to bring when hiking, hiking boots may be the absolute necessity. Keep your feet dry and yourself from slipping with a good pair of boots.

3. Layers

It can get chilly in the mountains, but climbing and walking raise your body temperature. Wear layers of performance-proven clothing like water-resistant jackets and comfortable, durable pants to keep you weather-ready and perfectly warm while hiking.

4. Food and water

Staying hydrated and fed is crucial to a great hike. Bring plenty of water and foods high in glucose and protein (like a protein bar) so you can hike longer and better.

5. First aid kit

In case anything happens, it’s good to have a first aid kit. Look for a kit with bandages, hydrocortisone cream, pain medication, and other items like hygienic wipes to keep you clean and cared for.

6. A compass

Cell service isn’t great once you hit the trails. Bring a compass or map to keep you oriented in case you lose your way.

7. Swiss army knife

Pack an all-purpose knife. We promise that it will come in handy.
