Must-See Waterfalls in Colorado

Of all the awe-inspiring sights nature has to offer, waterfalls are among the most breathtaking. From massive, thunderous falls to serene streams tucked within a forest, you’ll never be disappointed when you hike out to a waterfall. Fortunately for Colorado’s citizens and visitors, the Centennial State is full of jaw-dropping falls. When it comes to outdoor adventures and sight-seeing, you can’t go wrong with these must-see waterfalls in Colorado.

Bridal Veil Falls – Uncompahgre National Forest

Like much of the gorgeous Telluride area, Bridal Veil Falls shows off some of Colorado’s most iconic scenery. The dramatic white waters cascade 365 feet down into a forested box canyon, making this the tallest of the must-see waterfalls in Colorado. The area is also home to the charmingly historic Telluride, an old mining town bursting with character and history.

Helen Hunt Falls – North Cheyenne Cañon Park

The stone walls and wooden bridge crossing the top of Helen Hunt Falls gives the area an almost fairy tale-esque appearance. This 35-foot waterfall is easily accessible from the park’s visitor center, though the area also offers longer, more demanding hiking trails. Visit next spring to see the stream swell with winter’s melted snow. Alternatively, come during the winter (if restrictions related to the current pandemic have lifted) and experience how gorgeous the area gets when the water freezes.

Zapata Falls – Great Sand Dunes National Park

Just outside Great Sand Dunes National Park lies the somewhat hidden gem of Zapata Falls. Located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, this 30-foot waterfall drops down into a rocky crevasse, sheltering the area. Approaching hikers can just follow the sound of the rushing water to reach the falls. Make sure you make the trip in warm weather, as you’re sure to deal with spray and slippery rocks before you even reach the falls.

No matter where you go in Colorado, an unforgettable adventure awaits you. Pack your Colorado hoodie and head into the mountains, or get your sunscreen ready to spend a weekend in the Colorado sun. Once the COVID-19 pandemic has subsided, the Centennial State will be waiting to take you to the next breathtaking sight or experience.
