Family hikes are a great way to get out of the house, stay active, and explore the incredible world we live in. With so many beautiful and accessible trails throughout Colorado, it’s easy to find kid-friendly hikes the whole family will love. Discover incredible landscapes, fascinating wildlife, and endless adventure when you check out one of these great trails on your next family outing.
Lookout Mountain Trails
The trails at Lookout Mountain Park are perfect for younger families or first-time hikers. The park is an easy half-hour drive outside of Denver. There are two short trails—Meadow Loop and Forest Loop Trail—which are each less than a mile long. Don’t worry about the trip being too short, though; Lookout Mountain is full of gorgeous pine forests, abundant wildlife, and incredible views of the Front Range.
There’s also plenty to do around the rest of the park, including visiting the burial site of Buffalo Bill or spending time at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center.
Sawmill Gulch Trail
Breckenridge, Colorado, is bursting with incredible sights and adventures, but one of its best hidden gems is the Sawmill Gulch Trail and Fairy Forest. Beneath the Snowflake chairlift lies the Sawmill Gulch Trail entrance. You can explore an easy, slightly elevated hike through the picturesque forest. Splash through the creek, wander across bridges, and have fun leading the kids through this fairytale-like setting.
While you’re there, keep an eye out for the Fairy Forest Trail sign near Sawmill Reservoir. This adorable trail will take you through a world of homemade fairy dwellings left behind by other hikers getting in touch with their inner children.
Lily Pad Lakes Trail
Lily Pad Lakes Trail is another fairytale-like kid-friendly hike that the whole family will love. The trail takes you through lush evergreen forests, idyllic creek crossings, and glittering mountain lakes. There’s also the potential for moose sightings and the guarantee of abundant wildflower fields. Lily Pad Lakes features a somewhat remote location outside of Silverthorne, Colorado. Parking is limited, but you can take the Summit Stage Bus to the trailhead for free.
