The site is also noteworthy for its thriving hanging garden plant community. Because of these qualities Hanging Lake was designated a National natural Landmark by the Secretary of the Interior in 2011.

Hanging Lake is being loved to death by overuse. If you go, please obey every sign, especially the “do not walk on the log” sign, keep out of areas marked “keep out,” and pack out your trash. It is a very fragile environment, and too many visitors are abusing it.
